We carry a variety of named Japanese Maple cultivars at Appalachian Plantworks, including many rare selections that are great in both the landscape and as stock trees for propagating bonsai material. As is standard practice in the nursery trade, these are sized by container.

Note that this species is deciduous and will not have leaves if shipped during the winter. The trees pictured are representative examples and will not be the exact trees you receive. Some may have wire for movement or branch placement.

Specifications:

  • Scientific name: Acer palmatum
  • Height: 12"-36"
  • Trunk: 1/4"-3/4"
  • Hardness Zone: 5-9

Cultivars:

  • Arakawa: an old, green-leaf cultivar with an upright form that develops rough, corky bark in 3 to 5 years.
  • Deshojo: one of the older cultivars and popular for bonsai in Japan. It has an upright form and spectacular cherry-red foliage in spring, turning to green in Summer and finally a fiery scarlet and orange in fall.
  • Kamagata: a dwarf tree with deeply palmate lobes and red outlines on green leaves in the spring changing to bright green in summer and finally orange and red in autumn.
  • Kiyohime: highly sought-after dwarf cultivar with naturally compact growth. Stunning seasonal color transitions, from yellow-green with bright red tips in spring to deep green in summer.
  • Muraski Kiyohime: A vigorous dwarf with tiny leaves not unlike its cousin, but the Muraski has more vibrant colors/contrast and borders that more trend purple-pink than red. An excellent alternative for bonsai.
