Vine Maple (Acer circinatum) is a delightful Pacific Northwest native species that offers bonsai enthusiasts a unique alternative to the closely related Japanese Maple. These healthy starts showcase distinctively shaped palmate leaves with 7-9 deeply incised lobes. As the name suggests, Vine Maples naturally develop sinuous, trailing branches perfect for capturing exquisite cascading or semi-cascade bonsai forms. This resilient cultivar establishes quickly and thrives in partial shade, but can struggle in full summer sun.
Note that this species is deciduous and will not have leaves if shipped during the winter. The trees pictured are representative examples and will not be the exact trees you receive. Some may have wire for movement or branch placement.
Specifications:
- Scientific name: Acer circinatum
- Height: 8"-20"
- Trunk: 1/4"-3/4"
- Hardness Zone: 5-8
Sizing Notes:
- Regular Starts usually have narrower caliper and less development. They have been cut back substantially and may just be developing branching.
- Prebonsai are 2-3 years older and already have thicker trunks with character and movement, as well as good branching options.
