'Arakawa' is an old, green-leaf cultivar of Japanese Maple with an upright form. Its signature characteristic - and the one of particular interest to bonsai practice - is that it develops rough, corky bark in 3 to 5 years. These trees all originated as cuttings from one of our specimen mother trees at the nursery, so there's not graft union to content with and the prized bark will develop from twigs down to the exposed nebari.
Note that this species is deciduous and will not have leaves if shipped during the winter. The trees pictured are representative examples and will not be the exact trees you receive. Some may have wire for movement or branch placement.
Specifications:
- Scientific name: Acer palmatum 'Arakawa'
- Height: 6"-18"
- Trunk: 1/16"-1/4"
- Hardness Zone: 5-9
Sizing Notes:
- Regular Starts are 1-2 years old, with narrower caliper.
- Premium Starts have thicker trunks and/or better movement/branching.
