Evergreen's Roughbark Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum 'Evergreen's Roughbark') was discovered by Brent Walston at Evergeen Gardenworks some years ago. It was selected specifically for its exceptional bark characteristics that develop over time. In our observation, the cultivar begins producing textured bark on wood as young as four to five years old. The roughness is more pronounced in years 6 to 10, with deeper fissures and more aggressive scaling that gives material an aged appearance. Branches are more brittle, so wiring must be done carefully. Otherwise, it retains standard trident growth: vigorous growth and thickening, responsive to cutback work, and tri-lobed leaves that reduce well. These starts originated as cuttings from one of our specimen mother trees at the nursery, so there's no graft union to contend with.

Note that this species is deciduous and will not have leaves if shipped during the winter. The trees pictured are representative examples and will not be the exact trees you receive. Some may have wire for movement or branch placement.
