Japanese Hornbeam (Carpinus japonica), though uncommon in bonsai cultivation, makes for an excellent alternative to other hornbeam species. Relatively slow growing but also easy to care for, the Japanese Hornbeam develops gnarled striped bark with age and sports seasonal catkins. Its leaves are slender and serrated, looking almost like a Japanese Beech.
