Arguably the quintessential deciduous bonsai species, the Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) is a fantastic and versatile tree. These specimens are standard green mountain maples grown from seed -- usually Mikawa Yatsubusa, Seiryu, or similar -- that display standard A. palmatum characteristics rather than those of their parent. Boasting vibrant green leaves that often transition to fiery hues in autumn for a captivating seasonal display, they offer endless possibilities for bonsai styling, from elegant informal uprights to dramatic cascades.

Note that this species is deciduous and will not have leaves if shipped during the winter. The trees pictured are representative examples and will not be the exact trees you receive. Some may have wire for movement or branch placement.

Specifications:

  • Scientific name: Acer palmatum
  • Height: 10"-22"
  • Trunk: 1/8"-1/2"
  • Hardness Zone: 5-9

Sizing Notes:

  • Regular Starts are 1-2 years old, often with narrower caliper. They are whips cut back in the early spring and so will be in their first year of developing branching.
  • Premium Starts have thicker trunks, more development, and are usually a year older.
  • Premium+ Starts are often two years older than Regular Starts, and have the best trunk caliper, trunk movement, and the informal upright designs are developing nicely. They have usually been worked on 2-3 times.
