This pre-bonsai is a wild Caller Pear. Although this species is rightly often maligned for its exotic invasive tendencies in parts of the Southeastern US, these same characteristics make for a tough bonsai species. This tree was purchased 12 years ago as a sapling from a neglected nursery back-lot. This tree originally began its life as a grafted 'Bradford' pear.  The tree was trunk chopped below the 'Bradford' graft, leaving only a wild Callery Pear stump. The pear stump was planted in the ground for ten years to bulk up, build trunk taper, character, mature bark, and nebari. It was dug in Spring 2023, completely bare-rooted of all native field soil and old potting soil and planted in a soil-less permanent bonsai substrate. It was carved in Fall 2024.

This large pear has a lot of presence and exhibits lovely four season interest, will flower in the Spring on short spur shoots and if pollinated will produce small inedible but charming little pears. These small fruits can be removed to reduce potential exotic-invasive harm to the environment.

Note: this tree is for local pickup only unless you are willing to pay true shipping costs, plus $70 handling and packing fee. If you would like to arrange for shipping, please contact us.
