The Rocky Creek variety of Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata 'Rocky Creek') is a standout cultivar that grows unique contorted branching. The variety appeared as a sport of 'Bennett's Compact' that emerged several years ago. The dark green foliage typical of the species stays on year round and contrasts nicely with the silvery twisting stems. In our observation, the contortion is greatest in the less vigorous branches, so it can pay off to grow it with a sacrifice leader while you let the rest of your bonsai branches naturally squiggle around!

NOTE: many starts began as cuttings taken from leaders, which are not as contorted as side branches. The contorted form will develop in new growth over time.

The trees pictured are representative examples and will not be the exact trees you receive. Some may have wire for movement or branch placement.
