Size

Sharps Pygmy Japanese Maple stands out for maintaining its dwarf leaf size across different growth conditions - a trait that separates it from many dwarf cultivars that balloon up with fertilization or vigorous growth. The leaves typically max out around half the size of standard palmatum foliage, with deeply divided lobes that create intricate texture. This cultivar originated as a witch's broom mutation, which explains its compact (rather than slow) growth habit and reluctance to produce long internodes even when pushed hard. Branch angles tend toward acute, creating natural layering without extensive wiring. Fall color leans toward burnt orange rather than the typical crimson, giving it a distinct seasonal personality compared to other dwarf maples. These trees all originated as cuttings from one of our specimen mother trees at the nursery, so there's no graft union to contend with.

Note that this species is deciduous and will not have leaves if shipped during the winter. The trees pictured are representative examples and will not be the exact trees you receive. Some may have wire for movement or branch placement.
