Ume 'Kobai' Japanese Flowering Apricot

Ume 'Kobia,' or Japanese Flowering Apricot (Prunus mume 'Kobai') is one of the earliest flowering trees in the bonsai world, with its signature pink/red double blossoms appearing in mid winter to early spring. An old Japanese Ume cultivar, 'Kobai' sports an exceptional winter contrast between their dark bark and prolific blooms. Grown in many forms, they almost always looks good with twisted, highly dynamic trunks and branches. A difficult species to propagate, P. mume have small, delicate leaves and produces edible fruits. These were all grown as cuttings from our specimen mother trees.

Note that this species is deciduous and will not have leaves if shipped during the winter. The trees pictured are representative examples and will not be the exact trees you receive. Some may have wire for movement or branch placement.

Sizing Notes: 

• Small Starts are the most recent batch of cuttings/seedlings and have less branching or are runts of the litter.
• Regular Starts are usually narrower caliper and usually have branching. 
• Premium Starts are a year older, have trunk cuts made, and have the associated increase in caliper and development.
